Can anyone fill me in on the kiting scene in Dunedin?

I'm applying for school there and just curious about conditions?

Do you guys kite in the harbour, the beaches or both?

Yep, can do. Theres only about 6-8 regular kitesurf addicts in Dunedin.

>I'm applying for school there and just curious about conditions?

Everything from light winds through to insanity. Surf, flat, chop, whatever, most guys have 12's and 16's for the 20 knot harbour seabreeze.

All of the above, mainly in the harbour though, the harbour in town is dodgy enough to discourage most visitors but we make do.

Have a look at the beaches section on www.nzkiteboarding.com

we tend to go to Watercooled/Portsmouth drive which is dodgy and to Aramoana which is great. MSN or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you like. There is a Dunedin photo gallery too, see the bottom of this post.
harbour boosting, sideways buggying, harwood speed gps'ing, sometime kiteskiing, wave/washing machine kiting, gear breaking, driving about chasing the wind....

Thanks for the quick response Craig, I was actually reading all your posts last night to find out a little more about Dunedin, I figured you'd be the first to respond.

I'm stoked to get out there and join you guys.

Your scene sounds a lot like ours back here in Harrison lake, British Columbia, Canada. 12's and 16's, small, tight group of dudes and conditions that are all over the place. No waves here though, Can't wait to hit those, only tried wave riding a on two quick sessions. One of them was on 90 mile beach, north island.

We've got a lagoon in our town that we ride in the winter, not much bigger than a football field, that's our dodgy kite beach, I'm always up for a challenge.

Anyway, watch for me in February,

feel free to send me an email too, I'll probably send one off to ya later
