Daily Kiteboarding Report? come-on tell me where to go!! 8 years, 7 months ago #610

Hi Guys. :?:
I have been Kite boarding now for around 10 months since my first lesson and Ive got to tell you (and Im sure others will agree) that the hardest thing to learn is where to go on any one day with x conditions. Yes there is information around regarding sites to go and the wind direction that best suits and various wind-meters, however there seems to be something missing and that is a daily report on what to expect from any one location a bit like a surf report.
I would like to see the shops such as Tamaki, Kiteworks, Bayswater, WSP and Anabatic support more in a sort of web based Daily Kiteboarding report its in their best interests and they are more than likely to be online anyway.
Also if possible it would be good to have the opinions included from the experienced (and team) riders who seem to get out all the time and then tell us about how great it was.

Things to be included?:
Forecast for the day and what to expect
Specific areas with tidal information and local warnings/cautions
Updates
.+

Your comments, suggestions and opinions please

Question for administrator: could this be facilitated by this forum?

Re: Daily Kiteboarding Report? come-on tell me where to go!! 8 years, 7 months ago #611

helluva good idea and yes, it would work well with the forum. the big question is: who is going to do it?

there should really be a new topic started for each day with anyone's forecasts and subsequent reports. if people contributed to it, over time it would become an interesting log of conditions etc.

i could actually start a whole new section of the forum, a fourth category (after general discussion, kit for sale & stolen gear) which could be used for this purpose.

we could call it Daily forecasts and logs.

ultimately we could have one for each region.

what does everyone think?

to kick things off, here is my kiting report for tomorrow, if you are fortunate enough to live in auckland, the city of squalls.

friday will have a strong, wet northerly flow which will be ridden best at manly beach, st. heliers bay or takapuna beach, or possibly orewa if it turns out to have a little E in it like today. there is a 3m tide which is high at 8.18am and will provide good outgoing conditions for most of the morning - bummer if you're a desk jockey. the afternoon sesh won't be as good with incoming tide, but at least you can ride till 7.30pm after work these days. like today, there will be a bit of windswell on the east coast which is all good, providing ride-able waves at orewa today with a couple of stand-up surfers out.

tips: northerlies are usually wet affairs, with disturbed wind flow and potential lightning strikes. pick your moment, don't rush out as soon as you get somewhere - watch the patterns for 1/2 an hour first.

my pick: manly beach whangaparaoa at 11.00am giving me time to get up, have a few lattes, answer a few emails, dry my shit out from yesterday and mosey down to the beach for a solid kite-looping sesh in 25 knots hopefully, followed by more work in the arvo and then over a few ales, the start of the world cup on the goggle box.

Hey Shaun that's an excellent idea. There are many spots around Auckland that get northerly winds. I know an excellent spot near where I live... infact 2 places close to home get northerly winds. To name a few that haven't allready been mentioned.....

Bramley Beach
Omana
Eastern Beach
Clarks Beach

There are probably a few others as well...

HELAVA GOOOOD IDEA..

Takapuna has been really good this week.
I will be going out after work.. Should be there at 5:30pm.

Had an awesome session on Wed night on my 16.. A wee bit over powered but had a go on the new NASH board.. Man was it good.

Got a bit of a beating when I got home as it was the WAHINEs birthday... but hey.. A mans gota do what a mans gota do !!

We need some fast refresh webcams "facing" the main kit surfing areas of the beach !!! With such cheap Internet rates in NZ.. We should have more of these around.
Check out this one is Cape Town
rtww.ccii.co.za/online_images_bloubergstrand.html

The cam refreshes every 15 seconds. I was watching a guy yesterday -setting up and practising on the beach before going out almost real time..
(Its live during our night as its 12 hours difference).

I must say I think the www.windsurf.co.nz is awesome dont know how I would cope with out it, however faster refresh and better direction of the camera would be great. I know this is a windsurf site but some of the cameras seem to point the wrong way.. and I have yet to see some one kiting at Orewa (50% of the frame is the local shop ??) or Point C.

I guess when you have been in Auckland for a while, you do get to know were to go for any direction however there are some new kite surfers and tourists who find it difficult knowing were to go in odd directions.

On a lighter note.. I have made a small site for some of the pictures taken 2 weeks ago of me boarding. This site is too entice some of my mates abroad to come over to NZ for a kite surfing holiday.

Great photos!!!

..as for the weather, lots of hype about he wind today but it was never forecast and also never arrived.

I have looked at the maps and checked the forecast...
I actually think they have it right for the weekend as a low is forming in the tasman. It should tighten up and drop in pressure tonite.
The isobar chart looks like its possible.
Hopefully ready with a NE for sat arvo and sunday.

.......forecast.......
northwest 10 knots this afternoon and tending northerly tonight. Sea slight. Often cloudy with fair visibility in few showers.

Outlook for all areas until midnight Saturday: Northeast rising to 20 knots. Rain.

Swell forecast to midday Saturday: East Coast: Northeast swell 1.5 metres. West Coast: Southwest swell rising to 1.5 metres.

Howzat!!
sat arvo was on Orewa.
Good for a bit of ocean sailing. made nice tiki tour over to many/tindalls bay.
On the way over the wind was really pushing the 18m g along.
I was fair flying accross the wave tops.
Shame the wind dropped once i had convinced a few lads at manly to join me on the return journey and we couldn't make it back.
Actually couldn't even get out of they bay.
At least it didn't die when we were half way, that would have been a long long swim.

All good fun

Hey guys a number of spots would have worked well today. Obviously Shakespear Bay was pumpin, however the Glendowie Sandspit would have been mint today too, not to mention real windy (but still billiard table flat). Anyone go anywhere else?

Dude.. (Shakerholic)

I took your advice and made the trip up to Shakespear.. @!$# it was awesome. I first arrived at the spot only to think PLOKERS there is no water.. Then had a waddle along to the map on the beach only to find I was on the first bay. Stocked with my find I headed over to the next bay.

A bit disillusioned having found no water and kiters I thought no one was going to be at the next bay !!! Coming over hill I must have seen about 25 kites.. GO BABY !!! Well stocked. I took a couple of pictures in record time as I was in desperate need to get out on the water.

Once I get the photos developed I will stick them on the site.

Well stoked after a good session !!!

Yeah I've never been to that first bay yet, looks a like place for high tide from the dead south. The cliffs look like they'd funnel the wind and make it stronger. Interesting to hear if anyone has actually kited the first bay.

But yeah the second bay is where it's happenin. Great at any tide and at mid tide there is a flat water section close to the shore. Great spot to kite...

Places to go today? I'm gonna suss out the Manukau Harbour. A place called Ihumateo Rd. Breeze is startin to pick up out that way and any of the spots over there should be happenin. Tide is sweet for there too if you get out in the early arvo. Huia and Ihumateo Rd should have the wind today.... Interested to see where everyone else is plannin on going.

Had a sesh at Pine Harbour in the morning, 20 knots high tide, pretty mint.

Where is it happening today (18th)?

Did anyone head out to Ihumateo Rd yesterday (17th) ?

Yeah I went out to Ihumateo Rd yesterday for high tide, no one else there. I bailed because it's too remote for single person ops. Went out to Conifer grove instead and had a play in the white caps. yahoo
Today not enough wind at high tide at Ihumateo Rd, the sea breeze didn't get up till quite late. No one else there also. Spent time cleaning up the beach instead - on going mission.

Maybe Pine harbour again in the morning :?:

Yeah it was pretty windy out east... well about 15-20 knots looked like. Hey Scotty Huia may have been the shot today if Ihumateo Rd wasn't windy enough. It was SW today so anywhere in the Manukau would have worked... when did you go to Ihumateo Rd? Did you actually get out at Conifer Grove?

Sunday late afternoon session at Ihumateo Rd was very nice, light winds. Nice to see six of us in total. Unfortunately I had to go early, would have loved to stick around and yak.
Yes Ihumateo Rd does rock, this area has to be the future of Auckland kiteboarding.
Location question: where does one go when there is a northerly/ easterly with the Hauraki Gulf at high tide (eastern beach is out as it's too deep)? Has anyone tried out at Omana beach/Maeratei/Duder regional park??

Northerly + high tide = Bramley. Went there today... kick ass... tried some new toys too. Omana i've got lined up as a NNW or NW spot but Bramley is epic in a true northerly. I don't think there is a better spot in Auckland for a northerly direction than Bramley and not many people know about it either, especially the northern guys (although I'm keen on seeing what Manly Beach is like as well as Clark's beach). Hey Scott was there 6 people at IR? Shit that's crowded for that place... but yeah you're right, that spot is sooo good, infact the Manukau Harbour as a whole is the future of AK kiteboarding. There are spots for every direction there in that vastly underused body of water.

Hey Scotty I'm interested in seeing what Mairaitai is like in an Easterly at high tide... Waiheke Island could create a funneling effect and this may make it windier than Eastern... but yeah I'm keen on trying kiting out there (Omana may get an Easterly or maybe further around from Mairaitai at the second wharf for some crossonshore action. Also let's not forge that gem of a spot out by the Manukau heads called Cornwallis, looks wicked in a strong East or SE wind... open to the max.

Christchurch 9am Monday morning - labour day.

At 12-14 knot NE Brighton is already on, and with the tide heading out the estuary will be still ridable for the next couple of hours.

The swell is around 1m and most of the afternoon the beach should be great riding.

The tide is at 7.30pm tonight so those wanting to end the day with a flat water session should be able to from 4.30pm or so.

The weather report has the NE at 25 knots tomorrow, I'm thinking it may be more N than E with a couple of low pressure systems lining us up in the Tasman.

we've got a power line humming 30 knot ne here in dunners at 9:41am

the inner harbour is probably going to be 35+ knots, gusty and death

probably any of the beaches where it's not x-offshore will work today

the harwood flats will probably be cranking, the tides here low at 12ish high at 6pm, but the low tide yesterday was extremely low so I'm picking a beach will be the place

i'm picking an hour until the phone goes mad.....

My phone has already been ringing.

Su took off early to get a session on the estuary before heading to work.

Neil B is talking about doing a coast run down to Sumner to session the lagoon.

Just stopped in to see my next door neighbours - they are watching Space Monkeys and talking about kiteloops!

Its going to be a crazy afternoon...

Northerly getting up here in Auckland. Bramley Beach will be kick ass windwise but the tides a bit shot.... I'm off to Eastern to catch up with the Eastsiders. Outside chance of a trip to Clarks BCH. Hope you guys are gettin some of that northerly.

Re: Daily Kiteboarding Report? come-on tell me where to go!! 8 years, 7 months ago #722

two of us scored a 35 knot session all to ourselves, me on a 14, pete on a g-10, both nicely powered, very nice, two happy campers, the wind is now peaking a bit over 40

maybe we'll get another tomorrow if it doesn't rain too hard

A gusty 15-20 knots out at Bramley BCH but wind opposing fast flowing tide so not much upwind travel needed. Flat water, pretty nice conditions.
