Decay Kiteboards is about to shift operations to Ruakaka, Northland on the coast near Whangarei; what we believe is one of the top kiteboarding locations in New Zealand. There are 10km+ of white sandy beach breaks broken by two river estuaries in Bream Bay and numerous flat-water sand bars on Whangarei Harbour with at least one top class spot for every wind direction.

We have already shifted out of the office in Christchurch, with the workshop being packed up next week. All current orders will be shipped at the latest early next week, any new orders will have a short delay as the new workshop comes up to speed in the first week in August well discuss this at the time of ordering.

Our new office address will be:-

12 One Tree Point Road
RD1
Ruakaka

Contact phone number will remain the same 021 654 149.

The new workshop is in Kepa Place, two blocks back from the beach break at Ruakaka Power Station.

Once we are up to speed in our new location we will no doubt mark our arrival keep an ear out

Best regards,

David Kay

I remember when you moved TO chch in the first place and claimed that it was THE premier kiteboarding location in NZ! Anyway, good luck with the move and your new place

Christchurch is a great kiting spot with the smooth Summer winds, it's proximity to the mountains and all that. But there comes a time when you want waves and cross-shore conditions all year round, hey Fiona?!

The pooie isn't what it used to be... without the weed we don't have that glassy water in 20knots anymore and no crash matt when the water starts draining out.

Ruakaka is warmer, has wind all year round and West coast waves not too far away... just what this South African needs to stay in NZ!

Cheers

Su

Funny I remember most of my sessions being in waves and cross shore wind. Maybe because I didn't bother with the pooey. Sure sometimes I had to sail to Sumner for the really good angle but that was hardly a chore.

Christchurch is a terrible kiting location... It sucks. (I'm grumpy today...)
Smooth wind because it's rarely above 13knots - and light winds are rarely gusty

We don't have the 20knots either...

And on top of that we don't have any snow either...

I think moving up north is a good idea...

[saying so Christchurch is good city for other stuff... buying a house, going to the mall, ...]

Over the past week we have had 2 days of 20 to 30 knots side shore (at sumner) with 2m swell and I had my best wave riding ever.

Sure it wasn't over 13 knots by the logburner, just get out on the water and stop complaining

Oooooo... 2 days with 20knots (and 12) ... in 4 months ... Hum... I'll stick to my logburner and to the mall...
The very few times it's windy here... it's great.

The problem is the frequency of the f...... wind!

My mate Hippy said that the only place he would frequent if he lived in chch would be the nOs bars & that involves sucking more than blowing.

Cripes, it's cold enough up here zico... 12 degrees? 20-30 kts & with wind chill it must've been barely more than a few degrees.... Best wave riding? Whats the point if you can't move yo body parts.

Nope, 2 weeks before we had a WE of northerly with 12m kite and then 9m the next day, and even much warmer temperatures.

The problem in Christchurch is not really the lack of wind but more the temperature, we could be riding at Ellesmere every WE if we were keen.

But actually you're right, the main problem at the mo is more the lack of snow.....

25 knots at 7C is about -10C with the wind chill. But then you people are hard down there.

My Mum reminded me last night, as I was lamenting the fact that kids of today have it sooooo easy they don't know they're alive cos they don't have to learn to swim in the middle of winter, that the swimming school that we all had to go to as kids was called Penguin Swim School. How appropriate.

The 'amount' of wind in Chch is fine, it's the prevailing onshore NE direction that makes me sad. Other riders here seem to have a different definition of side shore than mine. "Side shore" just doesn't do it for me when it's 45deg onshore, or even 20deg. Side shore is side shore, and feels a whole lot different and produces a far better water surface.
Even the Chch Northerly is about 40deg cross on and makes choppy brown soup. The true NNW side shore wind is the best I've ever experienced here, all 5 or 6 sessions of it in as many years.

Snow? There'll be plenty of that stuff from september through to Christmas. But of course then summer sports start and the fields close due to lack of patronage.

This seasonal shift is getting rediculous. I wish summer and winter would stick to their allocated times and do what they're best at with a shitload more intensity.

Hey Kane!!!
you have hit the nail on the head as usual with your astute observations of current weather vagueries... ?Unfortunately? we all face realities of radical climate change some time this century... I add ?? here, as with all things it depends on your P.O.V.

For N Z kiters it may well be a blessing in disguise as we could see trade wind scenarios in the North - (Decay will be merrilly rubbing his twin tips even more vigorously than usual), along with much warmer weather, more frequent and sizeable motion in the ocean...plus new reef breaks where previously sheep frolicked high in the hills!!

The flip side to this coin of (mis)fortune is that we will also have: malaria mosi infestations, cities as atalntis... among other countless scenarios that will render incumbent ways of life defunct.

I suggest, as long as you don't pay millions for soon to be seabed coastal property, and see this is an inevitable part of our planets evoultion...it will be fucking interesting to be part of!
Hippies are always talking about saving the world but all they do is smoke pot and go kiteboarding.

Ip so facto send me the number.

Ha ha ! Yeah just another 8 meters higher sea level & I could be kiting from my back lawn.

The other side shore that you can get in Cristchurch is with a wind a bit more easterly than usual, coming along the Sumner cliffs.
If the NE swell is large enough as on Monday, the waves make their way through the estuary mouth and wrap around the Sumner coast past shag rock.
It gets then close to truly side shore to the waves, but opposite way as a N. It can be good frontside wave riding for natural stance riders and going upwing is easy if the tide is going out.
Waves are sure way smaller than out on the bar, but nice and clean with only chops in the middle of the estuary mouth on the upwind run.

The inside at sumner is the only spot i like local, can even be a bit off shore and yes can give a good wave but usually not big enough. Damn i sound like a size queen. You musta had a great sesh there the other day!

Hey Hippy... Climate change, pah! least of our problems.
Sure there will be bonus features though, just gotta move with it. It sure has been nice sun bathing down here mid july. It's nice to see the westerly isobars stretching straight out off the map after such a long absence. Great colac setup, and usually good for temple basin dumps... banishing those foggy drizzly northern lows.
