A stuntman tequila slammer, where you snort the salt, skull teh tequila then squeeze the lemon in your eye. I reckon that's pretty stupid...

Why, who are you? The media loves stories like that.
Get into kiteboarding and then you will have your own stories to tell.

A stuntman tequila slammer, ouch.
I hear if your drunk enough, you can eye ball the tequila too.

Re: What is the stupidest thing u have seen a kiter do? 6 years, 11 months ago #5635

i must recount my tale of woe from last sunday at muriwai. there i was, well out the back, sneaking on to triple head-high waves in gusty 35+ knot sideshore howling SSW celebrating my first ever tube ride, earlier.

as i set myself up to jibe on to another fine specimen, my chicken loop decided to ping off my harness hook. apparently, i wasn't holding the bar with any sort of grip and next second, my bar was flying at the full 3 metre stretch of my suicide leash, with a frisky 9m on the end of it.

still fully planing toward the wave, i managed to hand over hand and grab the bar, much to the hippy's amazement. both of us assumed everything would then be OK, but i was under a bit of pressure and was now struggling to hook back in and fly the 9m at the same time. i managed to get over the first wave but this threw me completely out of control into the path of the next monster, whhich was certainly the biggest of the day from my perspective (in the briny).

i hurtled over the falls and got rumbled for about 45 minutes, eventually spat out 1.5 kms down the beach and then faced a demoralising hike in soft sand straight back into the eye of a southerly gale, dragging my abused gear.

many have opined this was one of the stupidest things they have ever seen me do which i think is a bit rich coming from them.

Modified version of the flying stuntman as performed at the Aussie kitesurf Nats in Geralton by a local, where you do all the tequila, salt, lemon stuff then eat, yes eat the glass!
Now thats stupid

You do it with vodka - it hurts but as long as your wearing your 'beer armour' you'll be fine.

Orewa council is building a fenced off area along our beach!
Its an ugly scar and part of the beautification of Orewa project.

I'm meeting them on site this morning. Will have a copy of the plans published here as a lot of people are asking to be informed..

As soon as I asked what was going on they threw in my face their perceived dangers of kiteboarding to the public in a bid to avoid the topic.
Interesting attitude by our council..

How many businers owners in Rodney district Kiteboard or Surf Orewa?

So I'll get some plans to be sure their not messing with our beach use and keep eyeryone informed.
More info coming soon?

I think it is best to share what info has been given to them already.

I heard the wooden posts were going to go up to the surf club from the estuary - so as much as I wanted absolutely nothing at all to do with exposing kitesurfing onto the agenda- I did not want to turn up to the beach with wooden posts sticking out of the beach all over the place right where I like to get a launch next session.

Dear Councillor responsible for the below developments,

Fenced Dune Area - South End of Orewa Beach

Where can I find out information as to what is going on at the south end of Orewa beach. I see what looks like one area already fenced off (I presume to enhance regrowth of dune plants by people not walking on them?). Is that it or are there plans for more than this north of this point? These fence posts could pose a serious danger to kitesurfers particularly towards high tide should their safety leash fail/ kiters collide in that area. This is very unlikely however we like to minimise the risks, like any other sport, by kiting at suitable locations without solid posts or rocks etc sticking out of the beach.

I think educating people about dune damage due to plant damage, and not to walk on the plants./dunes when possible is important. I don't know if a sign with this information has been put up (it may have been?) - particularly to educate the many overseas visitors to the campsite that would be none the wiser coming from non dune sensitive beaches ? (Would help educate them for all dunes in nz). How did that end of the beach look 100 years ago - are there any old photos?

This new fenced area has taken away the natural look of that end of the beach that looks so good. As a ratepayer, would I have had any say in the matter if I had know about the plan - where would I have gone to look? I could not find information about it on the council website.

Thanks for your help,

Ian Collenette

Anyway Councillor Paul Klinac called me back and was very helpful with regards to my questions. Someone else (another kitesurfer) had spoken to them and they had decided to only go another 20m with them.

I wish they had not started at all and that there were no posts form the surf club to the estuary.

I did not know it was happening as it was not detailed on the development information sign that I read (ie clear that a wooden posted fence was to be built). The council has informed me that it was detailed on other signs for the past 12 months -have not check this out yet to see if it was clear that a wooden posted fence was to be built in these areas. I was not able to find any information on wooden posted fences on the council website either from links or using their search engine.

Well, I was not able to give public feedback before the work started which is a shame - hope the issue can be resolved and we can carry on having fun on windy days when we see very few non water users on the beach.

I have also asked Paul Klinac if there were any issues regarding kitesurfers and the beach other than these fence posts and he assured me there were none , so we are only dealing with wooden posted fences here.

Yep, plenty of posts all over the place.
Shane Bright has also been helping raise our concerns as beach users with the council.
Shane spoke directly to the digger drive and had their progress stalled for a bit of a re think. Glad to see your input too Ian. There has been a small reshape of their planned progress right to the carpark which is great.

So the more voices the better really.

I have just had a meeting on site and the fences are continuing to where the stakes are marked out on the beach at the moment.

The posts will all be will be roped and meshed.
Its a long term plan to grow the beach out in front of its current position.
It will be planted with grasses to stabilize the sand and help grow dunes.

I have requested a dune to be built in front of the fence post as a temp measure. Should reduce the risks of a direct impact with the posts if whipped up the beach. Its not much but its a start and its at only $1000-2000 extra cost to the $+30k project.

I understand what their trying to do, but I hate the fact it has a direct impact on us as beach users and its so ugly. The high tide set up area is directly affected by this.

In a couple of years the beach will be in better shape because of this work. But its going to be a constricted and fugly beach at mid to high tide for quite some time.

Paul Kinlac and his associate are looking at our concerns and will see what other changes if any they can accomodate or requests whilst still proceeding with their plans.
The project will be completed within the next two weeks.

Cheers, Lee.

Same thing has been done at eastern. bulldozers everywhere, shitloads of sand, an offshore drilling thingy and a pipe connecting everything. The angle of the pipe is a tad wrong for it to be turned into a slider but a few of us have jumped over it. I have also attempted this and got it totally wrong in 25 knots, sun around and powerlooped the 12m X2 while getting dragged through the mud... very enjoyable.

Another stupid thing someone did was muff launch in 25 knots, didn't know what he was doing and ended up being dragged up the sand mound, through the construction site and both his kite and himself ended up on the road... no wonder EB has a kiting ban hanging over it. anyway if you'll excuse me there is a brewin northerly outside and i haven't been kiting for nearly 24 kours so i'm getting withdrawal symtoms.

Sand mounds, barbed wire fences, diggers, bulldozers, pipes and hardhats all make great sliders by the way so make the most of the new toys appearing at Orewa.
eastern beach hates my guts because i did a big crap in my wetsuit whilst out there kiting 6 years ago. That's why i'm the most unpopular kiter in NZ. Beast from da east reprazent mutha f#$$%@ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STUPIDEST: ( These lists are endless )

Logging onto a kite forum. Being so obsessed with kiting that, when you can't do it you have to read or write about it with others who have the same afflictions.

Watching the "Daryls" of Raglan trying to kite in 0.5 kts with their 20m's & ending up terrorising people walking the beach by frantically running about & luffing/crashing into/beside walkers who are blissfully unaware of their peril.

Someone passing a fully powered kite to a newbie to "have a go"

Paying $ 1000 in '01 for a second hand kite, only for it to explode 2 months later... And still having a stupid smile on my face as I go shopping for industrial sewing machines.

FUNNIEST:

Kite pants... Laughing at them, then being converted.

My buddy Katastrophic.K.Kook; Too many instances, to relate them all would require a paper back version... But one vision in particular stands out; A series of uncontrolled kite-loop drags from the waves, face drag up the beach - releasing the kite - then chasing after it as it dissapears into the dunes 100 meters away at about 70kph. Then after diligently untangling, re-rigging, getting back out... Going into another out of control drag/crash 5 mins later!

Windsurfers... The denial, the list of reasons why kiting is no good . Then if they are able to break the mold & have a go, the long slow journey of relinquishing all preconceptions & shredding all those old habits.

Kiters! What a bunch of wacky characters, & this country being so small, it's always going to be a tiny group.... I just want to encourage some of the younger generation to get into it because they are the ones that are going move the standard this sport on in N.Z.

Usually you can tell a kiter by the enthusiasim with which they will relate their lateset disaster... That's because kiting is awesome & about the most fun you can legally have.

Doesnt he make his own kites?

Didn't see much action on my first time to Raglan, although the highlight had to be that guy from the shop busting out his 20 then dumping and getting sucked out to sea after the usual 'Can't relaunch bags can relaunch tubes' jazz

4 months ago now,
Mission Bay, 15 knots, high tide, that means a huge 10m wide beach.
Try handle pass on the water...
No success...
So what do you decide to do when your friend wants to catch your kite at the end of this session? :?:
Easy: you show him (and yourself too) that you can do this fuck...move...on the sand...
At the moment I tried it, I could hear my kitesurf friend says: "oh, that is stupid..."
I get the jump, the bar back and then I have a look to my beautiful kite...Something is not normal...Why my kite goes now in the power zone???
At this stage, I could have released the kite BUT, even more stupid, I said myself, that s fine I control the situation I ll have a little second of nice power and then finito, back home.
The problem was that during this second of power where the kite comes back to zenith, a nice little branch of these beautiful tree felt in love with one of my lines... Then it became an attempt for handle pass kite loop...'8'
Results: directly projected in the tree thanks to my home made handle pass leash, broke all the branchs I could and when finally my leash broke, I had this half second to realise how good it was a monkey, but that I also had to go down sometimes. What was down there? :shock:A nice bench...This kind of bench that looks pretty solid...I did not miss it, no worries.
That was the most stupid stuff I ve ever seen in my little kite life...and that was me. Fortunately, incredibly fortunately the kite did not hit anyone before landing in the other side of the road, and I just broke my pelvius. As a emerit doctor and kiter, Devet came to help me and could even manage to make me laugh in such circumstances, and when you have your pelvius broken, laughing hurts...Thanks Dev.

Ouch! You coconutter, I used a 2m ram air trainer kite on the beach to learn the handle pass. Progressed onto the water when my muscle memory was sufficiently programmed to know what kite / hands / bar were doing. I reckon I'm about a few hundred more surface passes away from doing mobes, which has been my goal.

Hope you are recovered. What's it like to break your pelvis, has it slowed you down from flying monkeys?

The worst is that I am instructor...so definitively not proud of that.
Anyone wants to learn to fly in the tree?
break the pelvius is pretty nice feeling...you feel like having a leg much longer than the other one, and you walk like Casimodo. Now it s already past, that s apparently a good bone to break cause it recovers quite fast.
still remains a bad "souvenir".
