go give kiteworks a visit in symonds st. they carry most of the main brands and will give you an honest opinion without all the bullshit you get at some of the 'specialised kiting shops'
if it's not blowing it sucks

The fella gets a bad rap on this site but I've bought all my kit from him since I arrived in NZ and I've no complaints. Reasonable prices and good advice.

Go and see Lee in Anabatic Kiteboarding on Orewa Beach.

From having a scane through some of the threads on this site I'm sure I'll oull in some stick for this bit of advice...I'll always rest on my laurels...Bring it on...

Depends where you are and who you ride with. If your north shore then i'd recommend Anabatic without a doubt, top service but you have to ignore his 'directness'

If your in the City then Kiteworks, both great guys and the best and only place to get kite repairs.

Take into consideration the people you will be kiteing with and where. I'd say stick with tubes if your in the city however on the shore consider the new Peter Lynn kites - You'll here a lot of jazz about how much better tubes are etc but people seem to think they are better than they actually are (me included) and it really comes down to whether you don't mind swimming or prefer to do more kiteing.

Not true Mr Fogg, I have an excellent repair service in Raglan.
The Hippy has seen my magic being done & said that the repairs I am doing to kites are not being done in Auckland. So if you have a split in half kite and its fabric isn't too worn send it down to Raglan.
Give me a call....

If you are starting up very strongly consider a second hand kite!
Your first kite(s) is going to get a beating if you want to know it or not.
Luckily for you the second hand market has crashed and you can buy some realy good 2004/2005 kites for $800 or so.
Just surf the forums and trade me (also try windsurf.co.nz) Get someone in the know to have a quick look at it and TADA - you have a kite.

Which kind does not realy make a huge differance in the beginning - the later model kites are all good.
(lots of hype about this that and the next, but they all fly true and mostly depend on the person dangling from them)

Good Luck and welcome to the addiction!
PS Maybe OBK and Hazel can help you out cheaply as they seem to know where most kiters hide there keys
and it seems aas there is some guerilla retribution to be had!

Kitemad whereabouts in AK r u? I'm gonna pimp for kiteworks as these guys do a great job and have some excellent deals on. Checkout their website as they have some very good used and older stylekites (02 - 04) that are a darn site cheaper than the new stuff but still great quality. I got myself a damn good kite from the specials there about 2 months ago.

They also do great repairs.
eastern beach hates my guts because i did a big crap in my wetsuit whilst out there kiting 6 years ago. That's why i'm the most unpopular kiter in NZ. Beast from da east reprazent mutha f#$$%@ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was referring to the fact i wouldn't consider anywhere else in the city, i'm sure there are a few places around NZ that do more repairs.
