The weather can be anything from hot and humid in the north island and cold and also humid in the south of the south island
Canterburry is meant to be dry and warm with sea breezes in summer.

NI: The Northland is great for kiteboarding (but the whole country is). Advantage of the northland: there are only few km. between the eastern and western coast. We really like Muriwai (beautiful black sand beach) west of Auckland and Raglan 200km south of Auckland. Very polyvalent spot with flat, waves and a current helping staying upwind. We didn't get to ride in taranaki but I tought it looked too nasty anyway...
The Kapiti coast is OK, but not a very sexy place... Try make Ferry, Eat of Wellington. Cold lake but great super flat offshore conditions.

SI: Nelson, great, windy sunny, warm but flat...
The west coast can get huge waves and big beach break depending didn't get so muhwhere...
Chirstchurch, flat water and sea breezes in summer. Good riding with very strong winds on the lakes.

Just get a very good map with all the gravel roads and trt to fing your own spot. Wev' found so many spot between Auckland and Cap Reinga!!!! If you've got a 4X4 you'd be the happiest kiteboarder on the planet!

Hope this help. There are many post on this forum and kiteforum.com about where to ride in NZ!
