Hey Fraser,

You still doing the Inverrrrrrcarrrrrgil stint?
I imagine your just about on ice down there now, Ha!
mmmmm nice and warm up here.

Drop us a line some time, be good to catch up.

For speed I think a super pin single fin would be the way.
And a foil kite, maybe the phantom or a hybrid design.

Chris and Pete at Peter Lynn Kiteboarding would have some good ideas.
But you might have to wait until the thaw next spring.

For hybrid kites you mean something like a C Quad or a cross between a ram air and an LEI? For boards are we talking about directional boards or TT boards for all out speed? Lastly where in Auckland is a good place to get some good speed runs in?
eastern beach hates my guts because i did a big crap in my wetsuit whilst out there kiting 6 years ago. That's why i'm the most unpopular kiter in NZ. Beast from da east reprazent mutha f#$$%@ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For a Hybrid I was thinking of a hybrid guerilla, high aspect foil. like the phantom but possibly with a bridle. More unstable and prone to yaw but with more pull than a c-quad and capable of building up an awesome apparent wind because its a foil.

A simple kite, flat water a lot of wind gets you to around 70km/hr.
key thing is to ride what you know or understand. or what the sponsor is paying you to ride.

one of the first reports of speed runs I heard of was of Mark Arundel and Royce in tauranga on the c-quads and a directional board in '99. think they were clocking 68-70 clicks.

We all ride beter kites than this now so we can all have a crack at speed runs if we want to. (I'll leave all the official rule requirements for setting records to the geek and tweakheads at this stage). But really keen to see more attempts and the results.

I'm not sure where to find it, but you can calculate pretty accurately some of the results possible before you hit the water. You can tweak your kit to get some improvements before you get on the water.

Wind strength / sail size / drag ratios etc.

Boards, you want a board that creates less drag the faster it goes but still allows for control in the given water conditions.
Directional pin tail with a precision machined fin could be a good start.
The Underground guys would have some ideas for sure here.

kites, throw on some kevlar micro lines 0.5mm for drag reduction.
For Auckland the best speed results could be on 10-13m kites at a guess and for once the heavier guys might have an advantage in our gusty conditions.

Fraser is probably riding 40kts and just using a hanky.

Meola reef would be a good spot for speed.
Anyone else riding with a GPS and have some results?
