The true sign of kite addiction has to be, when your at work and looking at the tops of the trees to see how strong and which direction the wind is. I don't think any other sport has you looking at the weather conditions quiet as much as kite sports.

I also second that if you have your buggy in the lounge to watch tv you are addicted, though thats a step to far for most wives.

i did the tv watch once when i got the buggy bags seat from the uk and had a shiny frame i was considering making a buggy seat chair but the feeling passed. and yes sitting in a buggy in the garage thinking of the next design, guilty there too.

* all you non kiting mates ask you what the weather is going to be.
* when your watching a movie and you tell everyone in the room that its blowing 18 knots in the back ground.
* you get agrivated when it is windy but your not kiting.
* you plan your life around the forecast.

*** when your going to sleep but you can still feel the pull of the kite from today's session.****

Travel shows are the worst. Missus likes to travel and you are in big trouble when you note that it doesn't look very windy 'over there'.


Family does not comprehend the sacrifice of catching up or going shopping when it's blowing +20knots.


Worse yet you get asked 2 weeks in advance whether you plan to go kitesurfing that weekend.



You get woken up at 3am by a flapping bedroom curtain. Knowing that it will blow +20knots all day you spend the next few hours awake trying to come up with a valid excuse to get out of your responsibilities at work. Just to end up at work, tired and grumpy from lack of sleep and general disappointment.

Yeah - 30 years of windsurfing and kiting makes you an expert in 'reading' every bush/tree/flag/cloud pattern that you drive past or look out the window at - definitely obsessive!

I work at sea on the coastal ships and there has been many an hour sitting on a watch looking at the white tops with a puddle of drool around my feet, it is the worst torture imanginable, 8 days at anchor once off Ruakaka watching the crew out having a blast just about everyone of those 8 days while all i could do was watch. A piece of me died that week, i would go to my cabin after and sit with my board on my feet with the curtains drawn and the lights off. (true story)

the other sign that you are addicted is when every time you are on the net you check to see what gear is going on trademe and cringe at some of the things that people are trying to flick on to the impulse buyers.

It definately got pretty grim there for a while lol however we are in marsden point tomorrow morning, i knock off at 8 in the morning and have through to four in the afternoon and the day is set to be totally nuking so id say the good out-weighs the bad

* you quit your day job and start making kite boards for a living
* you annoy bird lovers with your profuse kiting
* you build a cable park for the "no wind" days.

Infact i think thats a new level of dedication to kiting!!!

A whole new level of addicted when you live above your own kiteboard factory and kite shop. He teaches, competes, designs, indulges... the whole lot. Surfs, buggies, landboards, snowboards, kiteboats. The category for Dave is passionately dedicated. He lives kiting by combining all his other talents, focusing them on this sport.

Though he doesn't actively annoy the bird lovers... You don't even need a kite as pretty much anybody who goes anywhere near there can tell you. Even working with DoC to come up with an acceptable kiteboarding guideline for the area in question is not enough.(sign posted at the sight in background of photo)

but makes for an interesting read. when buggying at the beach i always take note of the birds life
from what i've seen there more scared of people than kites, ive had gulls sit a meter off my kite and follow it along the beach in the wind shadow several times.

and a big difference between bird reactions use to people like on muriwai, and more remote beaches where they like more space.

seems to me the more kites the less stress for birds!

yeah jimmy i survived ,it was abit disappointing not enugh pressure eh but the direction was wickd it put me toeside on a lefty, i wouldnt wanna mess up out there but at least the clubies will see you if it goes wrong,as for dave hes a lost case mate lol, na he can sort them out ova there no prob althou im behind him 100%.

You know you’re an addict when you don't get your fix on Friday cause the blow fails to arrive on time and you and six other junkies are left sitting high and dry on the beach. Consequently, you sneak out of bed on three occasions during the night and log onto internet weather sites to check if there's going to any blow available locally in the morning.
