TOPIC: Lost in migration

Lost in migration 1 year, 4 months ago #26056

Hey!

I'm all new to New Zealand, however wouldn't say that new to kitesurf... having said that I did my first post (in this forum) a month ago or so - asking what kind of kites to get for auckland winds. Was happy to recieve tons of good suggestions. Thanks guys for that.

Now I have finally geared up and ready to get wet

THE big questions now are
1) Where do you people look for weather forecasts? And do you? - I mean you're pretty lucky you know - with all those winds blowing here all the time.

2) Which would be a recomended spot to go to? I'm based in west auckland but travel isn't really that much of a problem - i would rather travel some more just to know that I will end up in nice place that have enough landmass(beach) to safely launch etc... I'm all new to riding in Ocean (and rips) so I also look for some crowdier place with plenty of folks to ask for some advice and assist with launch and landing - i must admit my confidence is not at my peak right now, probably will need to adapt to these conditions, probably there is something different in these shores that I need to know

3) I would also gladly join someone who has plans to go out to some spot maybe in comming days. I hope 31. and or 1.,2. will be windy

Pretty long post huh? Hope I didn't bore you to death

wind at windguru.cz

location, based on the wind for the day, at this site cause it gives a good nearest beach, based on wind - maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=e...=10&source=embed

Farm Cove on 31st maybe

SSW (at the time of writing) in Auckland for NY day - maybe Muriwai or Glendowie sandspit for me.
Hmm, to kitesurf or to landboard? That is the question for a kite addicted junkie.

I'm happy to hook up for some sessions over the next few days, if the winds out then so am I . Have a look at the google link for locations. Shakespear bay is also good in a SSW/SW

hi,
I use windguru as well, combined with a look out of the window!

Had a good session today, first session in a shorty this year, roll on summer; but wind not doing much for the next couple of days. Looks on for Saturday, I will be out at Muriwai, happy to hook up if you want a session. How long have you been kiting? waves can get big at Muriwai.

Im sure there will be plenty of kiters at Point Chev if you would rather go for something more sedate! flat water but you will need boots as there are shit loads of shells to cut your feet on.

I'm glad there are days when you actually can go without full wetsuit. Where I came from it only happens like 5 days out of entire year. I have been boarding for 3 years, but i don't think thats an indicator, cuz 3 years of kiting in Auckland would probably be like 6 years in my place of origin. I mean you have wind pretty much every week. Thanks for invite GB Neil. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go for big waves on my first attempts. When I first went out to Piha on very calm day - just to see what's ocean like i saw some big waves - and my flatmate told me - that these are probably the smallest waves you get to see in Piha - that told me all I wanted to know about west coast the bigest waves I have seen are the smallest ones in Piha - funnny. I went out to Point Chev as you suggested but didn't even pump since it was the wrong direction and wind was just dropping in power. Anyway nothing wrong with having my first kiteboard session in this country on the 1st day of the new year - that's what I hope to see 2mo

Dean from Auckland Kitesurf Center has made a fantastic google map of the local kite spots and the wind directions you can ride them in.

I use windguru for a quick wind prediction, and you can check out some of the live wind readings at windsurf.co.nz

yeah west the west coast has some descent waves. the general rule of thumb. the more wind the bigger the waves/swell. so i 15-20 knot day will be far easier to handle than a 30+knot day.
