Hi all,

I'm still quite a beginner though I can go upwind and jibe quite consistently now.

I have about three weeks after new year where I will be free to roam around and kite when the wind allows me to. I would rather stay in one location that engage in a big road trip chasing the wind.

So my question is where should I go? This summer we have a strong La Nina weather pattern so winds should be more easterlies. So i figure somewhere on the Pacific side would hold more chance of good kiting session. I like the wilderness but being still new to the sport (only started in April this year) I wouldn't want to push my luck too much and would rather have a few other kites or windsurfers around.

Any advice would be most welcome

Cheers

You fail to mention where you are based, which would be useful for those interested in replying to your thread. Notwithstanding, Deane Joyce of Auckland Kitesurf has provided excellent detailed analysis of Auckland kite spots. He is a top chap and his information is and advice on Auckland’s spots is what I refer to the gospel according to Deane Joyce.

Hmm, to kitesurf or to landboard? That is the question for a kite addicted junkie.

Hey Deano,

I am based in Auckland and I have already bookmarked Deane Joyce gospel. that's a great source of info.

Auckland is a great place for kiting and I still have plenty of spots to explore there. However I am in Auckland all year long and I would rather escape the big smoke for a few weeks (also my missus would be pretty annoyed if I told her we would stay in Auckland during the holidays.

So I'm looking at other kite friendly locations where I would be able to find other kitesurfers and that would offer me good wind and water conditions.

I'll be in Taranaki for Xmas but then I'm free to go anywhere good in the North Island.

So I'm just looking for suggestions and info on the kitespots.

Fitzroy beach is the local spot in the naki. its good sw to ne. theres some epic spots down the coast but they get pretty hard core.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to have a look at fitzroy beach while I'm around but yeah I know that the naki can get pretty hardcore wave wise (i went kayak surfing a few times overthere), and at the moment I still prefer flat-ish more manageable water. Maybe next year I'll have more skills and confidence to go in the surf but for now I prefer to take it easy.

Hi Quentin,

If you are based in Auckland, Ruakaka is a good choice for day and weekend trips:

We have also installed this for the no wind days:
