I think we need to re-state that Kohimara and St Heliers are not good beaches for beginners. They have a short launch area, a busy road, lots of trees and lots of pedestrians. Accidents do happen, but there were two separate kite incidents at St Heliers today and both could have been prevented.
An accident resulting in hurting yourself is bad enough, but one where you endanger others and create a bad name for kitesurfers will get us banned from our local beaches. Please kite within your limits and ask for advice from more experienced kiters if you are not sure of a beach and its hazards.

Someone made it across the road?!

I put my kite up, pulled the release and packed it away, there was this older guy
whos kite hit the toilets and ripped.

Point taken about St Heliers not being a place for beginners. Will head out Pt Chev after i buy a wetsuit and then have a play around.

I was in the changing room at the beach when a kite crashed into it and also against the wall and almost onto the road. The were 2 kiters just there, and one shouted to a girl 'Get out of the way'. Now I admit the guy should have pulled his saftey, but hey, we still should help each other out. I reckon that is what the community is about. We normally look out for each other on the beach.

And if you see beginners or idiots, just go and talk to them.

I do think St Heliers is a good beginners spot, I learned there, but maybe not on a straight on northerly with 20 kites up in the air.

I just wonder how long it takes until we get in trouble for using the beach as a car park. It looked like a new Pac N Save store opened up on the beach. I am local and know that some 'oldies' get upset about those thinks.

Are you the one with the yellow wipika? very dangerous kites those old wipika's. If you're learning I strongly advise you dont use this kite and to get lessons!!!!

if some old ppl had their way EVERYTHING would be banned lol. Those waterfront beaches get damn busy... one of the reasons why i seldom kite there... sometimes the shit hits the fan even when you've been kiting for ten years.

St Heliers imo not the ideal beginners spot in da weekend haha...

oh bring back the good old days when taking a trip across the road was considered part of learning and "lessons" were what you learnt the hard way when you rigged you lines up wrong in 25 knots

ha ha reminds me one new years day one of the boys forgot to attach a steering line, and self launched himself, lucky we were on an uncrowded (read no one else within 10KM) beach and the kite just went all the way across the wind window and stayed there. Good old days are well and truly gone!

With another northerly coming in to Auckland tomorrow, lets try and be safe out there especially on the smaller launch-site beaches such as Kohi and St Heliers.

I'm fine if you want to kill yourself , but potentially hurting others, especially non-kiters could cause the local community to start laying down some rules.

I feel like an old fart saying this, but we are so lucky right now to be allowed to kite right on our own doorsteps - lets try to keep it that way.

Enjoy the weekend wind

i agree with johnnie. dump at home or do it in da sea but please keep the beaches obstacle free so us kiters can wreck the scene without damaging our kit. And pleeeeese get those old ladies walking their poodles OFF the beach
