Hey guys, I am really keen to have a kite at the Lagoon but am unsure the easiest way to get up there
I have been told that there are two ways to get up there, Firstly is to access the beach and drive the length of Muriwai up to the lagoon.
THe other way is to drive up there through south head.
As i do not have a 4x4 i am wondering if i drive up through south head and access through the forestry rd, will i still need a 4x4 to drive the rest of the way onto the lagoon or can you do it with a two wheel drive car??
Any advice would be a huge help!
Cheers

maybe find some friendly kiters that are going up there and jump on board?

Also add the moose meet to your list of things to do. its a whole long weekend of camping in the dunes of the moose kiting your brains off until you bleed then kite some more!.

PS the top dunes by the muriwai lagoon are called the mooseland.

Drive up south head road, take trig road to hte left, then right into the forestry, onto inland road and you're there

Googleearth it and you'll clearly see the road

closes at 6pm, gate locked, no cellphone coverage so unless you have bolt cutters you're in for the night.....!

Road closure info on 0800 RECRE8

No 4wd needed, nice rig area, watch out for set nets and folks who are very protective of all birds.....

do you mind if I ask when the moose meet is?

Hi Michelle. Many thanks for that. I have every intention of being there (despite how far away it may be). Conveniently lying over my birthday weekend! Hopefully I will have integrated myself into Auckland kiting culture by then (arriving from Tauranga in a week for a permanent stay), In fact, any tips on the Auckland kiting social scene would also be greatly appreciated

see you on the water

Awesome!!
I have had a look on wises and google earth and can see exactly what you are talking about!
Does it work best on a low tide? can you kite there at high tide or will you get stuck if you do?

Re:Muriwai Lagoon Access 1 year, 11 months ago #24181

The inside lagoon (Waionui) works 3hrs either side of high and you can walk home if you get stranded.

Just realised you might be talking about the 'outer' lagoon/sandbar system actually outside the harbour on the coast....its not tide dependent so much

If you're sailing on the outside, you'll either need to go up the beach in a 4wd or sail over to the spit from Waionui and walk your kite across the thin part to the outside lagoon.

This outside area has changed quite a bit; perhaps someone who's been there recently (and I've seen plenty of kites out there in the last month) can tell us the deal.

Be aware that there is , supposedly, no vehicle access on the spit, or the weapons range (conservation/danger (= unexploded stuff) reasons) .....it does not seem to be enforced,.......so far.... but don't be surprised it they start@
