righto,

winters rolling in. its time to think about a little storm kite to sit under my 11m edge.

any suggestions?

being an ozone man i'd like to stick to ozone but will keep my mind open.

should i think about a lower aspect kite? something super stable and predictable?

ps i'm thinking for 25 to 40 knots. i'm 80kg.

Plummet as you probably know, we regularly get some pretty nutty wind down here in Wellington. The ability of a kite to handle gusts is key when you start talking about kiting in 40 knots of wind. The Cabrinha 6m Switchblade is absolutely killer in this sort of wind. I have had my one out in 20-45knots, so being a bow it certainly has a big range. Looking around our area it usually the last kite standing on the water and has certainly been battle tested in one of the gustiest spots in the country. There are lots of nice kites out there when the winds steady, but they really get shown up in our area as soon as it gets gusty.
Regardless of brand I would stay away from anything that is directly attached and is not bridled.

I am a Cabrinha guy so don't take my word as gospel, try it for your self back to back with any other brand. I am pretty sure I know which one will win out but happy to be proved wrong.

thanks guys good imput.

I'm still trying to figure what size i need.

The reality is that i won't be kiting in 40 knots. But i will do plenty of days around 20 gusting to 35 maybe a spike of 40? So i think i'd like a kite that won't be underpowered in 20 but wont punish the hell out of me when the 35 knot squall comes thought.

i'm thinking 6 and 7 maybe too small? maybe an 8m is better?

and yes it will be an sle.

I run both the 8m and the 6m Switchblades and am around the same weight as you. I would say it depends on the brand of kite, forget the number on the kite and just go try a few things and see what you are comfortable with. I am comfortable on my 8m at 35 knots but anything more seems to get a bit on the edge. Your 11m edge should do at least 25 knots so you are really looking for something in the 25-35 knot range with maybe peaks of 40.
Are you coming down for the Harbour Blast on Sunday?

true i've had the edge out in 25 untrimmed and i'm under control. I think i can hold that kite to 30ish. but i won't be launching it in foul 25+ gusts weather. so 6,7m is fine for 25knots? or lulls of 20?

No I wont be at the downwinder this sunday. used my weekend outings up doing the 90 mile.

I am in wellington Wed, Thur this week. maybe do Butch's wednesday night session on the way down.

I'd be keen for something thrusday evening. If you can at least look at the weather and let me know what the best spot is. I'm proficient zaPPING back and forth but still prone to cocking up the odd jump and hindenburging my kite. So keen for a location that has some downwind beach if i need to self rescue.

Both wed and Thursday are looking really good for wind. Stonking southerly Wed and a NW probably Plimi on Thursday. Probably good days to do some high wind testing!
Bigger board to cruise through the lulls helps with those gusty holes we get here. 6m and 8m both work down in the 20-25 knots range, so just a question of preference and how powered up you want to be.

ok maybe i'll look at plimmy for thurs..

so on the list i have

6 or 8m switchblade
7m north vegas. (are these any good? i've never flown one)
8m ozone instinct light. psssibly out of my budget but a sweet kite.

ps i'll be looking for a good second hand one. don't have the funds
for new.
pss Jesse i have zero knowledge of core kites. are they any good? at this moment i presume they are cheap knock off of good kites but have no knowledge to base that on.

Anything can go wrong with any kind of kite for sure but i don't trust kites with pullies and/or bridles as high wind kites after the kind of stuff i have seen when they mess up directly due to these 2 features (deathloops). it's a difficult one because some of the pulley/bridle kites feel so comfortable in high gusty winds now and make it so much easier than a few years ago - but like i said when it goes pair shaped - it can do big time and so fast.

i guess it is just down to the fact - is it theroetically possible for the kite to go into a deathspin due to bridle tip tangle,1/2 inside out spinning kite, failed/broken/jammed pully.

It was a jammed pulley that was partly responsible for a large hole in the head of someone at point chev, someone knocked clean out at orewa at launch time (twisted/jammed pully - to kiteloop) and 2 bridle wraps (deathloop drags 200m +) that could have killed 2 riders at Orewa at other times (dragged towards rocks)if it was not for other riders on the ball.

I think the designers are a little more onto it with regards to this today but not fully that is for sure, so a heads up!
