Belted down to foxton yesterday for a kite surf lesson from Butch at Wind Warriors.

turned up at low tide (10am)did a landboard session for an hour or so then Butch gave me the low down for the water. Kitesurfed until 3. had a break for an hour or so then went to the estuary and busted a land board session.

Stopped for dinner then pumped up again and headed on for an evening session at Beach. Wind warriors has an open kite day every wednesday night. with demo kites and boards. Butch was sharing the stoke with a bunch of keen groms

So another 2 hour session there and i was stuffed. time to drive home.

Good times good times.

Foxton is a sweet spot for kiting and is generally blowing harder than the forecast. i rate it as a top spot to go and kite. Take your small kites tho. theres quite a few 30-40 knots days down there.

20 knots again...... you must wake up each morning with massive grin on yourface.

anyway since i'm up and planing i'm back into considering the himatangi-waikanae challenge. i still don't want to put the landboard on my back so my latest mad idea is get a surfboard. chop it to the size of my deck (it will be wide enough for my monster board to fit inside and cut some wheel wells out. Viola. instant boyant light deck that my monster board fits on.

Good article... Butch you might want to push that kite board speed up a bit tho... they are hitting up to 62 knots (115 k) which is a mite faster than 90 k!
Cheers

Short answer no...
long answer .....We ran a number of speed events for windsurfers back in the late 90s... but as you know you cannot predict wind in advance...so it wasnt until the advent of gps with downloadable track logs linked back to the international gps speed sites that allowed anyone to compete anywhere that we saw some good jumps in speeds...
these sites have made speed events for everyone but the elite obsolete...
Check them out at
Kitesurfing : www.gps-kitesurfing.com/
Windsurfing : www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx

Local events can be easily run through the sites... ie pick a week / month and kiters any where in NZ can compete ... register sessions and be ranked against other kiwis....

The navi units used by most sailors now are cheap and have a very high level of accuracy and sessions added to the site are normally checked and verified by a local timekeeper

registration to the site is free although its recommended you join as a gold member for a small fee each year... gives many more functions and search capability on the site and allows for future development of the sites.... speed adds another dimension to the sport... why not try it!
