Howdy,

I'm after some ideas for a kiting holiday around may-ish for a week. Criteria:
reasonable chance of wind a good chill out if no wind solo-kiter friendly

Budget anything from backpacker hut to whatever.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

Hey,

You might get a better response if you give some idea of how far your budget stretches. Are you thinking NZ only or are you keen to go somewhere in the Sth Pacific or further?

If it's NZ would you rather head north to some slightly warmer water or are you up for a cold water mission?

Strictly flat water or are you keen to kite in some waves?

Cheers,
CH

Mate,

Head for Tonga go to Haapai, stay at Matafonua. Dave and Sue are great 7 top kiting spots including two right at the lodge and accomodation food is reasonable and flights are cheap.

Need your own gear and pineapple lumps are the underground currency

I am pretty sure my recomendation hasn't occured to many, but Madagascar looks like an great spot if you are up for some adventure. May onwards is the time to go for the trade winds and avoids the rainy season. It would be a guranteed adventure if you don't mind 3rd world travelling. It is the sort of trip that could be combined with a trip to Perth and or Mauritius.

Let me know if you want more info as I am looking at this as a destination for myself.

Hi Paul,

May is a little early or most of the common south pacific spots to get trade winds - they are usually on from June. This might explain the lack of replies you have been getting.

I'm going to suggest Vietnam, it is high on my list of places to go, should be still rocking that time of year and is cheap once you are there.

Cheers

Cheers all,

Budget smudget.

I'm not sure I'm ready for another 3rd world mission travel, but Vietnam could be a interesting alternative.

I could always push back to June or July, just I'm trying to juggle a holiday and some alpine stuff around that time (and I'm jonesing for some kite/chill time).

Will investigate further.......

Paul

Edit: Just checked out some places in Vietnam and it looks promising - maybe more april than june....? Any specific recommendations would be appreciated - the main place looks to be Mui Ne?

DK - You're just trying to sell me a smaller kite for the windy days

yea vietnam is a good destination but id recommend missing mui ne and instead goto vung tau

it has a beach perfectly placed for the south westerlys that blow thru(june-oct) as with mui ne the direction can be off-shore and gusty and not always blowing.. when the north east wind blows mui ne is perfect which is oct-march

access to vung tau is quick and easy and safe by using the hydro-foil from saigon which takes 1hr 20mins

accommodation is entirely up to you on your budget and all the hotels have wi-fi for free

if your traveling on your own it has a colourful nite scene with bars full of the local talent

let me know if u need to know more

I'm looking at getting a group of kiters together for a trip.

At this stage still very early in the planning but prob looking at about two weeks in august.

Cook islands was fun last year but would like to explore somewhere else.

Was thinking Fiji.

Can get good deals on lodges and flights for a group.

Expecting to spend between $3 - $4g. But when you consider flights, accom, food, boat support etc its prob bout right.

Nice one thanks.

I see the wind in Vung Tau is predominantly NE in April - being a peninsular is it kiteable in most winds?

No worries GC

Vung Tau caters for both directions with 2 beaches.. the main beach(is called back beach and the other is front beach)for the north-easters is over 5 k's long, about 30-40 metres wide at high tide and nice clean sand.. 1 of Vn's best beaches

It can get a little crowded in the weekends when alot of ppl from Saigon come down for a day or 2 and then the rest of the week its peaceful

Also there is a russian kiteshop so if you require anything or a repair drop in.. just be aware there prices are high for rentals US$60-70 for use of a kite for 3 hours

Most of the budget hotels are located near this beach.. other than kiting there isnt alot to do as most of the shops, restuarants(western and local), bars, cafes are further inland and near front beach.. altho its less than a 10 minute taxi between both beaches

Id recommend buying a map and hiring a motorbike and explore around to get your bearings

If your going in April the wind should be north east and your have a 50/50 chance of getting wind around there

Good winds to you

Im going back in July
