TOPIC: go west - paradise is there

go west - paradise is there 8 years, 3 months ago #1974

can i just say: i had a helluva sesh at muriwai's famous south break today, pulling into fat, triple head-high, top to bottom set waves with perfect 10m sideshore power and not a punter to be seen (except stu stomping around in the shorebreak, and his girlfriend phil faffing around on the beach trying to get his kite airborne - a feat that has thus far eluded him two days running).

but i digress. there i was pinging over ever-increasing walls of whitewater until the sea finally turned green again and the horizon between Oaia Island and Australia was filled with advancing walls, grim and silent as they gathered intensity for the big bowl, and my personal pleasure or watery grave.

snap onto the face and get the feel of the pace, feather then edge against the kite and take the drop microseconds before the section throws it's load. bounce into the pit and actually butt-check for a second - stand up, carve down toward the kite and tweak another couple of hits through ridiculous sections for the gannet's sake.

yeehah that's living - riding back in and boosting off the backs of little re-forms and blatantly showing off for the monkeys on the beach.

that was my fourth session this year and already the best of '04!

then, after tweakage at the gannet colony, high on the cliffs, we spot gavin and some goose on a naish enter the cauldron far below us. unaware of my running commentary to my mates - gavin streaks straight out into the motion in the ocean and after a bit of pussying round, starts hooking into the brothers of the same swells that i'd just ripped. oblivious to my helpful advice, he finally strings together some nice turns which make me scream into the wind: "yeah baby - right on! who's your daddy! yabbadabbadoo" etc until i spill some of my beer.

on the way home we spot the kiteworks clan, five hours late as usual hustling to the beach.

remember bubba and make no mistake: only a surfer knows the feeling. i'm back!

Best session of all time today for sure (despite finding a kite washed in without owner attached - only for them to appear quite some time later through the violently rippy surf).

I was driving to the west coast listening to BFM at about 9:30am today when I recognised the voice talking on the radio as Tims(you may know him as astro tim) giving a lengthy kitesurf report from Murawai beach with one of New Zealand's few quality radio DJs Mikey Havoc - wind report, blue bottle warnings and all....

sad to hear someone got hurt at Meola today (lauched into/over sea wall and wrote off the side off a van -second hand information)

more constant sideshore with lined up swell please

It's all good out there ! The last 5 days has been unreal !! The 30kt + westerlies has made for some absolute butter on the inside and some legend wave riding down the beach. There is without a doubt no place better to kiteboard than Muriwai esp as the sun is setting-After a few days u hardly seem to notice the bluebottle stings- Where has everyone Been ?
Although the usual work bailers were amongst it !

best day last week- Dawnraid at mission bay in cross sh , then decided to wag work and hooked into best waveriding sesh at muriwai ive had there in 3 years- Phat air alround-great to c more and more dudes lashing it up out there !
Peter

Nasty to here about the dude into the car at meola, WHO ?

were you guys up at the rivermouth? i saw a quartet of kites getting busy up there.

ugly news from meola! as i've long opined to anyone who will listen - the place is a death-trap for young players, especially at highish tides and in disturbed NW flows - you are much better off driving to muriwai and getting out of control on the sand.

i hope whoever it was is coming right and he isn't one of my mates! does anyone have any eye-witness reports?

the butcher's bill has another item added from yesterday - apparently nick batchelor broke his ankle at muriwai also. ouch!

and here I was thinking that I was all alone out there, the words of the gambler ringing in my head
have to agree one of the best sesions of 2004 and I've had about 40,
going to go get some more this arfo then Raglans looking epic for saterday.
the meola guy was a tourist from bora bora and sounds like he is very lucky to be alive. have to agree with your comments re meola shaan.
launching at high tide in front of the rock wall in yesterdays sort of wind is not a good idea for anyone
Muriwai can certainly dish out some good hidings also as many have found out in the past and as Big Nick found yesterday. That black sands as hard as rock or at least harder than ankles. Hope those to two breaks heal fast so you can continue your quest to land on my head real soon

go west, paradise is there,
you'll have all that you can eat of milk and honey over there...

you'll be the brightest star the world has ever seen,
sun-baked in howling wind, in film and magazines...

go west, paradise is there,
you'll have all that you can eat of milk and honey over there...

you'll be the brightest light the world has ever seen,
the dizzy height of the jetset life, you could never dream...

your pale blue eyes, strawberry hair,
lips so sweet, skin so fair...

your future bride, beyond compare,
it's rags to riches over there...
