Hi, I’m new in Christchurch and was wondering which online forecast site provides the most accurate wind speeds in the estuary. Have used WindGURU but find it very inaccurate in some condition.

Have also tried to Google for any nearby weather stations or webcam without any luck.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi, I only ever look at www.metvuw.co.nz forecast charts...not live, but you can plan your day reasonably accurately sometimes maybe lol...I think you'd find it ok

I'm not sure about the elevation to get the accuracy but this station is smack in the middle of the path

howisit.co.nz/ is a membership site but he often parks at the estuary when theres enough for him to go out on the windsurf and it updates live to the web from his car/trailer

www.Windnet.co.nz is pretty good for real time reports.
But it requires a bit of training or experience to get the most of it and decipher the data.

Also, windfinder (or a digested local version on www.pray4wind.com) is good to get the overall trends, but it won't be of much help as far as the estuary seabreezes will be on or not, as there are really local effects to be taken into accout.

The HowIsIt sight (www.howisit.co.nz) has a station at the estuary as well as one for Ellesmere and Waikuku. There are more sites as well that I don't use as much. For the small subscription fee it is well worth it...

I find windnet to be amazingly helpful!

For example 7-10 Knots SE at Nth New Brighton and 20-25knots in Lytteton means the esturay is crankin.

Most of the time i find that The esturay is similar to lyttleton but a bit more consistant.

In a SE Esturay is stronger than the beach, but in a NE or N its usually stronger at the beach...

Also if you see those sweet E clouds building up on the port hills in the morning... its looking good!

I use windguru to give you an idea of direction and when its going to change, usually if its showing 10 knots on guru ne its good, also check metvuw and the metservice site;

I usually check all three to get an idea that way you get an overall picture.
Northerlies quite often don't happen, NE, E & SE usually good, anything else usually a waste of time!

This site worth a look for the whole of nz, all private stations. just make sure the one your looking at is up to date. (to days date and time)
