TOPIC: Stance trip in NZ

Stance trip in NZ 3 years, 7 months ago #17736

Hi guys,

We are preparing a Stance trip in NZ for 2009!
It will be in the Stance magazine and most of all in the Stance DVD! We'd get a whole bunch of pro riders to come and ride for the DVD.

We want a "freeride trip" - waves mostly.

I have in mind, Raglan, Taranaki and the far South.
It would be a 2 weeks trip.

What do you think is the best season for these 3 locations?

Cheers
Delphine

Thanks for that.
Well at that stage I'm thinking March.
March seems OK for raglan, Taranaki and it's not too cold in Colac...

Someone has any suggestions?

We need a bit of time to get everything organized and the Nationals is too soon

Cheers

Hi Delphine, hows it hangin'?

Rags in March is mostly sea-breeze conditions - typically we get a run of 3-4 days of seabreeze when its Southerly from the bottom edge of an aproaching anticylcone. The weather pattern at that time of year in Rags is predominantly North or Northeast from high pressure systems out east, also Feb-March is the cyclone season when low pressure systems & ex-tropical cyclones move south from the sub-tropics - winds are strong N.E-S.E & heavy flooding on the east-coast.

As Johnny stated there is no real season in N.Z there can be southerly fronts from Antarctica on christmas day followed by hot N.Westers originating from central Australian deserts, on boxing-day.

The best summer swells often come around easter-time March/April so the Naki could be firing for your trip..... just make sure you give yourself a good long holding period ( coupla' weeks ) for all the necessary elements to line up.

I dont think you'll have to worry about lack of wind or swell down the big-south, but you might have to wait for Global Warming before you break out your boardies down there

Sounds epic, is there really such a thing as a whole bunch of "pro" wave riders ?

Good on you, Stance

It would be pretty good to see a bunch of riders in New Zealand, an AWESOME country for kiteboarding.
As coastlines' ads:more mt manganui than maui, more tauranaga than tahiti, more whangamata than waikiki....so you have the choice.

Hopefully stance will show more than the jackass show or continuous handlepass video, then stance will be a real stance (remember the first series).

Good luck guys.

Hey Stance, sounds like a nice little trip you have planned there. There is a heap of coastline to be explored in NZ.

If you are looking for a more remote out of the way experience, look no further then the Wairarapa which is about a 2-2.5 hour drive out of the capital of Wellington. A heap of awesome breaks there that rarely get ridden by kiters. Castlepoint, Riversdale, Tora, & even the spit at White Rock. A few nice reef breaks that produce nice waves on par with Taranaki. They work anywhere from a southerly to a northerly which is the kind of wind you can expect that time of year, not to mention the swell.

But yeah as with anywhere in NZ you will need a good holding period & be prepared to travel & chase the best conditions. Luckily a lot of NZ can be driven from the east to west coast in a matter of hours.

Don't forget the West Coast of the South Island, e.g. Patarau (around the corner from Golden Bay) and Nine Mile at the southern end of Cape Foulwind. Wind and waves that would test the mettle of any kite-surfer.

So we're about to kick this off. We only have about 12 days so will be sticking the the South Island, mainly south of Christchurch.
This means we're starting in Christchurch, heading for Dunedin and the Catlins and probably across to Invercargill and the southern lakes.
Check out http://stancenz09.blogspot.com/ for info on whats going on.
It'll be a good chance to watch and ride with a few of the best kiters in the world so check the blog to find out whats happening and where we are..
