a 9m is too small unless you are <60kg

a 12 or a 14 or a 16 would be better.

you'll need less wind, and things happen slower in lighter winds
harbour boosting, sideways buggying, harwood speed gps'ing, sometime kiteskiing, wave/washing machine kiting, gear breaking, driving about chasing the wind....

Hi DK,
I dont want to sound like your dad, but I assume you are just starting out and never had a lesson. Any good instructor would point you into the right direction, based on your weight and ability. So do yourself favor and first learn how to fly a two line kite (any cheap $20 one of the Warehouse will do). If you can fly that small kite with your eyes closed get one or maybe two lessons. After that and assuming you have a decent instructor he should help you to pick a kite for your ability from the vast second hand market out there. If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact us.
Cheers,

Cheers kiteboardingshop, i've had two kiting lessons and have got to the point where i could spend all day going back and forth. My last lesson was in indonesia so i'll get in touch with the coach i had here for sure. I remember him reccomending a boxer SLE but havnt seen many come up cheap second hand , i'm not sure i wana spend a lot on a kite until i'm confident i wont break it, what do you guys reckon?

How much do you weigh and what size board do you have?

Wakeskates normally have a lot of rocker and therefore are quite slow for kiting and going upwind is a bit tougher. However, it is definitely better than no board and will get you out there. So now to your original question: If you intent to have a one kite quiver the 9 might be a bit small for your weight and board and you will need wind of at least 18 knots to stay upwind comfortable. If you intend to get a larger kite in the near future the 9m is a good kite to learn with. Hope this helps. If you have any further questions give us a call. See you out on the water!

www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=170902732 - Ok so this popped up on trademe (don't know how good a kite it is but the price is right), its in auckland so i want to go have a look, should i get them to show me it flying and is there anything i should be looking for (holes etc), also 18m sounds a bit big, is that in feet or something?
Thanks in advance, all your guys input has made buying a kite tons easier.

Re: Good first kite? 3 years, 9 months ago #17339

Sorry, this is absolutely the wrong kite for you. Please feel free to call us, our team rider in Auckland or any other dealer if you come along another deal on TradeMe. I am sure the guys will help you to select a good kite within your budget.
Cheers,
