Feel ripped off with mobile wind check calls?

New law today you can take your 027 or 021 mobile number with you to either telecom or vodafone if you want to change.

If you call vodafone (as I have been doing for 3 years) and want to change to a plan but also keep your phone number(useful for business and less hassle) they say a big fat NO - WE ARE WORKING ON IT -same answer for 3 years.. to make them more $$ of course

Today if you call Vodafone they still say NO - BUT! by law you can as of today transfer your vodafone prepay number to a telecom prepay phone and then straight back to a vodafone plan.

trying a bit to hard to keep it on topic! but effects everyone at the end of the day as NZ has the most expensive mobile phone calls in the 1st world.

So your saying you could have changed your plan and got a new number 3 years ago but didn't for some reason like keeping an old number.

Is it just me or is that fuzzy logic?
Why not leave your old pre-pay phone playing a message for a year saying what your new number is. It costs next to nothing to do this.
+ you get a free $500 phone on a plan.
I know plenty of guys who did this.

I know the cost of calls is expensive here compared to the UK, but who wants to live there. NZ has a low population density so the coverage costs/km/person/min would be what you need to look at to compare the viability for a network operating here.
I say screw telecom, good on Vodafone for setting up shop here.
Bye bye 025 hello 021

I have to agree with Lee. I moved here from the UK six months ago and it's rubbish (the UK, that is). Apart from the pubs, of course. And the chips. And the Chinese food over there is better - it's full of cauliflowers and broccoli over here, what's all that about? And the drivers over there aren't quite so insane (apart from in London, where it's bleedin mental). And the telly is better (just). And as for what mobile to use - go Vodaphone

I think Ian's just trying to say that its a step in the right direction and its probably one that'll help us - heck isnt i a good thing if we're recieving more reports on what the wind is up to???
Phone calls are often how i find out whats going on, so anything thats gonna better that is good for me. cheers Ian.
why describe the UK? Ausie, the states, SA all have cheaper calls. What we want is better deals here!

Take some positive news and just appreciate it no matter who its from

The number portability issue thats been announced this week is going to benefit business and customers long term, cool. The biggest loss of power for the telcos, primarily Telecom, will be naked DSL availability.
Now that will rock when it actually happens.

Ian, why complain about the PROFIT a company makes.
You run a business last time I looked.
The attitude that the amount of profit a company makes is bad is a distortion of the facts of business.
Business is about profit and return on investment. And there is a huge investment of capital there. I'm guessing your making a healthy profit and good on ya if you do.

Here is a simplistic view of just one of the companies you mention.
On the NZSX.co.nz Telecoms Capitalisation is $9,697,144,299
Thats what it would cost you to buy Telecom today.
So your going to get 1/2 billion return on your investment of 9.6 billion.
What's that, like 5%?
It depends on who you talk to if that is a good deal or not.

In contrast to this it is possible to establish a small business building a product that is contracted to a 3rd party for assembly.
There is little or no risk with no staff, no commercial property or lease, possibly not even a phone account.
Surely the % PROFIT return on the investment is much higher than Telecoms.

PROFIT is not such a dirty word when you look at the full picture.

PROFIT/RISK/INVESTMENT it's a tough balancing act.
Me, I love the challange of business, it's a rush.
A lot of hard work, but a rush all the same.

Not complaining about profit. Just passing on information to anyone that knows me where it may help.

although it is great that you can keep your same number swapping networks / changing plans etc... just remember this now means an 021 number isn't necessarily on the vodafone network.... so when you go texting your 1000 txt for $10 vodafone to vodafone you could be in for a few suprises... i'm sure the phone companies didn't put up too much of a fight over that new law....

telecoms return is closer to 10% after tax which is pretty good in anyones books
They are the largest NZX listed company but ony 26% New Zealand owned so most of that profit is going offshore, it certainly isnt going into upgrading the network
They have run their monopoly like any business would, gouging the customer for maximum profit from minimal outlay
The got the network for a song off the government years ago and have been laughing all the way to the bank ever since.
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
