They are the "big three" kite areas within stones throw of akl and i plan on visiting all of them this year. So to all you locals (Skyrider, Decay, Torrin etc) what are the best tide and wind conditions for each spot? i'm only coming down if its gonna be over 20 knots hahahaha.

Hi Mark,

In Ruakaka we can use just about all combo's of wind and tide, however W with a high tide is not recommended (no beach to rig/launch at Pyle Road West).

If you are going to travel, then by far our best conditions are E/SE and full tide, this gives ideal conditions at our two river mouths - Waipu and Ruakaka.

Please keep in mind that both of these spots are DOC reserves, and nesting areas for rare birds - stay off the dunes and outside the roped off areas during nesting season - Nov-Mar.

BTW - todays weather report just happens to be 20k E with a 10.30am full tide...

Give me a call on 021 654 149, when you get up this way - I'd be more than happy to give you a weather report/spot recommendation.

Cheers,

Dave Kay

thanx Dave

yeah i'll be heading up your way in that SE direction. nice and convienient as SE doesn't work well where i live.. ie 5 knots at EB, 15 at Orewa and 30 up your way... hahahahaha... and eb at fulltide in a SE is ghey. so brign on the crankin SE and full tide. i'll probably head up your way first as Autumn tends to blow quite a lot of East Systems in but of course as you know anything can happen. Won't be today though as sorta busy at da mo... need to sort car out before doin the long drives etc. i'll be posting the details on my blog and when i come i'll bring a camera so should be kickass.

i'll txt ya when i arrive and we can sesh it up in 25-30 knots of perfection.

New to the area but I don't see many Taurangians blathering on this forum so I'll share what I have found out. If anyone can add on or refine these observations....

Anything with a Westerly component is prime in high tide at Fergusson park in Tauranga Harbour. Goin against the grain as the tide rolls out and the wind barrels in. The harbour can be ridden on Easterlies from a grassy launch east of Fergusson park too. It gets pretty shallow on the Mt Maunganui side of the channel which is great for practicing your junk.....pretty flat overall...but if there is a N to ESE or SE head to Taye Street in the mount over by the artificial reef.
