Hey

I come to Newzealand for a working holiday, but mainly for kiteboarding.
I will start in Wellington at November the 18th. There i want to by a campervan and than travelling around in NZ.
But for the first days in Wellington. Can you give me some advise for some good spots?
I am not a so experient cause here in Germany i have to drive 500km to the next sea. I can go upwind without any problems and at the moment i start trying jumping.

Thanks for your advise and greetings from Germany

wellington in november... i hope you have a small kite!!!

i am born and bred in wellington but now live in akl. however i went down to wellie earlier on this year and was shocked at how good it was.

kapiti coast is the place to be when it's too windy in the harbour.... waikanae rocks.
eastern beach hates my guts because i did a big crap in my wetsuit whilst out there kiting 6 years ago. That's why i'm the most unpopular kiter in NZ. Beast from da east reprazent mutha f#$$%@ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kapiti coast will be sweet as. if it's over 30 knots in the city/harbour (this is common) then kapiti coast is all good. and there is plenty of room too.

in a NW kapiti coast has much less wind than the harbour and is far more suited to beginners.

i loved the harbour in january when i went down but conceded that it's not a beginners place.. i also kited at waikanae (on kapiti coast) when it was too windy at seatoun (harbour spot for northerly winds).

harbour spots:

Seatoun: Northerlies
Petone: Southerlies
Eastbourne: NW - SW

coastal spots:

kapiti coast: west coast beaches, strong NW - SW winds, waves
lyall bay: S - SE, waves, stay on western half of beach, very regulated due to airport

there is another coastal spot that i haven't been to called lake ferry/onoke. it's a lake seperated by the sea by a 3km long sandbar. it faces south and needless to say would be kickass. talk to the locals for more imfo as it's a bit of a drive from the city.

Kitesurfers.co.nz is realy good. Lots of information. Thanks.
Another question: where can i find a good kitesurfing school in an around wellington. My girlfriend will join me in january an she wants to learn kitesurfing. Perhaps some can recommend a beginner spot with a kitesurfing school.

Thanks

Hey Juergen,

Definitely bring a small kite, it is the glorious windy season Best places now are Waikanae (SW, NW, N, NE) -not too gusty. Westerly sucks and you generally have to head north for clear wind. For a little more extreme with waves and flat water we have been on Plimmerton the last few weeks - need a bow in here, its gusty as hell.

Otherwise we fly Lyall bay in our southerlies... must be intermediate rider, gotta call the airport first and no flying near the runway. See www.kitesurfers.co.nz or talk to the lads on the beach.

We are very rarely flying Petone (only in the wierd south thermal or beginners) and never really sail Eastbourne now...

If you turn up on the south end of Waikanae beach there is guaranteed to be kiters if its blowing.
